William C. Arthur

December 23, 1885 — August 30, 1967

William C. Arthur, ex-mayor of Meadville and former president of Talon, Inc., died at Spencer Hospital Wednesday, August 30, 1967.  A trustee of Allegheny College and past chairman and director of a multitude of city and county organizations, he was 81.

He was born at Bellevue on December 23, 1885, a son of Dr. Hugh Wilson and Anna Elizabeth Watts Arthur, and married the former Sara Margaret Warrick.  They had two sons, William C. Arthur, Jr. of Worchester, MA and Dr. James Hartford Arthur of Denver, CO.  Mrs. Arthur died in 1934.  On November 16, 1940, he married Carolyn Brownell Fahr.

Mr. Arthur came to Meadville in 1927 as secretary of Talon, Inc.  He many various position until February of 1939, after the death of Wallace Walker, when he was elected president of Talon.  He retired as president in 1944.

At the election in November of 1961, the citizens of Meadville named Mr. Arthur to a four-year term as mayor.  He did not seek reelection in 1965.  Instead he devoted much of the last two years to the Crawford County Humane Society, which he and Mrs. Arthur helped establish in the early 1950s.  He served as president of the society.

He was an active member of Old Stone Methodist Church, he had been a member of its Official Board and Board of Trustees.

After his graduation from University of Pittsburgh with an AB degree, he became a member of the faculty of Bellevue High School.  While teaching, he attended the Pitt Law School and in 1913 received the bachelor of laws degree.  He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity.

In addition to the two sons and widow, Mr. Arthur is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Margaret Kirkpatrick of Meadville; a sister, Miss Mary Arthur of Bellevue; a brother, Dr. Walter C. Arthur of Cuyahoga Falls, OH;  and 11 grandchildren.

Services were held at Stone Methodist Church.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
