William D. Campbell

July 7, 1877 — March 15, 1962

William D. Campbell, who for 30 years as court crier helped maintain smooth-running Crawford County courts, died Thursday, March 15, 1962, at 2:15 p.m. at City Hospital.

Campbell, 84, had been hospitalized for 18 days following a stroke suffered at his home at Blooming Valley.

As court crier, Campbell was recognized supervisor of the tipstaves and he called court sessions to order.  He also had served as a deputy sheriff.

He was born in Troy Township on July 7, 1877, and married Pearl W. Pratt on July 15, 1930.

In addition to dairy farming, Campbell also had been a salesman for the L. P. Gunson & Co. seed company of Rochester, NY, for 40 years and earlier had been a deputy sheriff in Chautauqua County, NY.

He was a Methodist and a member of Covenant Masonic Lodge, Cambridge Springs.

Surviving are his widow; a stepson, R. Keith Pratt of Saegertown; one brother, J. Floyd Campbell of Titusville; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  A son, John Matteson, died in February, 1961.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Blooming Valley Cemetery.
