William E. Reed, 72, formerly of Meadville and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community since June 26, 2000, died there Tuesday, April 3, 2001.
He was born October 3, 1928 in Bentleyville, a son of the late Albert Evans and Anna Deems Reed. He married Marion Roach October 26, 1945 and she survives.
In 1956, he and his brother opened and operated Reed's Amoco on Washington Street and subsequently opened Reed's United at North and Liberty Streets and Reed's Guld Station in the Park Avenue Plaza. On February 17, 1970, he opened and operated Mr. Donuts in Meadville with his partner Norm Sundstrom. They subsequently opened Mr. Donuts in Edinboro and Myrtle Beach, SC, retiring in 1992.
He was a life member of the Meadville Sertoma Club and Meadville Elks Lodge #219. He was a former member of the Meadville Country Club, Happy Hashers Square Dance Club and Meadville High School Basketball Boosters. He was the recipient of the first Outstanding Citizen Award in 1970 from the Meadville Area Chamber of Commerce for his active participation in many youth activities. He loved golfing and especially taking golf trips to Myrtle Beach, SC.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 55 years, include two daughters, Donna Giles (Carey) of Saegertown and Darilynn (Lynn) Luzier of Saegertown; one son, Dean Reed of Meadville; six grandchildren, Pamela Ryder, Bill Novak, David Luzier, Kelly Luzier, Lynsey Luzier and Christopher Luzier; two step-grandchildren, Darren Giles and Kimberly Snyder; five great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Nora Pemberton and Amanda Harsch (Jim), all of Cleveland, OH and two brothers, Albert (Bud) Reed of Sun Valley, AZ and Milton Reed (Edna) Fruita, CO. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth Waid, Sara Smith Brown and Martha Meadville.
Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.
Interment was in Beallsville Cemetery.
