William J. Small

August 21, 1864 — May 28, 1963

The Rev. William J. Small, 98, retired Methodist minister of the Erie Conference, died Tuesday evening, May 28, 1963, at the Methodist Home for the Aged on North Park Avenue after a long period of failing health.

He was born August 21, 1864, in a two-story log cabin near Clarks Mills, Mercer County, a son of William and Sara Wentz Small.  He attended Allegheny College for one year and attained a BA degree at Grove City College in 1901.  In 1911, Grove City conferred upon him the degree of PhD.

He and the former Linnie A. Kashner were married in 1892.  The Rev. Mr. Small entered the Methodist ministry in 1896.  His pastorates included Wampum, Harrisville, Jamestown, Conneautville, Reynoldsville, Sheffield, Mercer, North East and Cascade-Erie, PA and Falconer and Dunkirk, NY.

He and Mrs. Small entered the Methodist Home in 1946 when it was located in Conneautville.

He is survived by a son, Philip A. of Bartlett, IL; a nephew, Harry A. Small of Clarks Mills and two nieces, Mrs. William Yeager of Clarks Mills and Mrs. John Marstellar of Greenville.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Perry Chapel Cemetery, Clarks Mills.
