William P. Davis, Jr.

William P. Davis, Jr., 66, of Columbus, OH, died Tuesday, November 23, 1999, after an extended illness.

Born in Cochranton, February 3, 1933, he was a son of William P. Sr. and Thelma Davis.

He graduated from Meadville High School and Nichols College in Dudley, Mass.  Upon graduation, he entered and graduated from Employers Group Insurance School in Boston and Travelers Insurance School in Hartford, Conn.

As a Meadville High School athlete, he played football, basketball and threw discus and shot put on the track team.  He was a starter on the school's first district basketball championship team.

For 15 years, Davis broadcast football and basketball games for Meadville Area Senior High School and Allegheny College on WMGW Radio.  He also broadcast games for University of Pittsburgh colleges and universities.

In the early 1960s, he moved to Columbus OH.  He broadcast Ohio State football and basketball games with Bob Sherman on WMNI Radio, where he was instrumental in developing "High School Games of the Week."

After two years in Columbus, he moved to Cincinnati.  On WCKY Radio, the 50,000-watt "Cincinnati Sound of Sports," he did various sports and hosted the "Jack McMahon Show," which featured the coach of the National Basketball Association's Cincinnati Royals.

Survivors include his stepmother, Grace Davis of Meadville; two daughters, Tammy A. Haverfield of Mansfield, OH and Tracey L. Morrison of Reynoldsburg, OH; three sons, Todd F. Davis of Scottsdale, AZ, Christopher D. Davis of New Orleans and Scott W. Davis of Pickerington, OH; a stepson, Jeffrey Hall of Reynoldsburg, OH; and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, William P. Davis, Sr.; his mother, Thelma B. Mason; a sister, Barbara Skelton; and one granddaughter, Stormi Morrison.

Services were held at Waid Funeral Home.

Interment was in Greendale Cemetery.
