Winifred Claire Garrigus

Winifred Claire Garrigus, 88, of Meadville and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Community, died there Sunday, July 12, 2009.  She was a loving wife, mother, aunt and grandmother.

She was born March 25, 1921 in Conneautville a daughter of Carl John and Edna L. Nicolls Tyler.  She married Boyd f. Shaffer in 1942 and he preceded her in death January 5, 1968.  She subsequently married Charles S. Garrigus March 3, 1972 and he preceded her in death September 24, 2004.

Winifred was a 1938 graduate of Conneautville High School and she worked for American Viscose Corp. and First National Bank for several years.  She spent her later years as a housewife.  She enjoyed her work and time spent with various crafts, sewing, her home and her family.  She also enjoyed spending time in Florida with her husband.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a former church Deacon and a member of Love Circle.  She was a member of the D.A.R., Order of Easter Star, Meadville Woman’s Club, the Mayflower Society, the YWCA, Meadville Medical Center Auxiliary and Meadville Elks Lodge #219 Auxiliary.

Survivors include: two daughters, Paulette Elizabeth Yurchick and her husband Larry of Oakmont, PA and Colleen Derby and her husband David of Meadville; a step-daughter, Janet Kathleen Spradlin and her husband Victor of Columbus, OH; a step-son, Charles Roger Garrigus of Conneaut, OH; ten grandchildren, Brent, Samantha, Jeffery, Heather, Bethany, Robert, Mark, Debra, Dyonne and Brian, seven great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Florence Tyler and a brother, Donald C. Tyler.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, Inc., 581 Chestnut Street, Meadville.

The funeral and committal service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 890 Liberty Street, Meadville, with the Rev. Dr. Brian K. Jensen, Pastor, officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
